Singapore
Speaker:
Ang Seow Lian
Assistant Director, Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), Singapore
Abstract:
Corruption control has been top of the Singapore Government’s agenda since attaining self-government in 1959 and, subsequently, independence in 1965. It is a social and economic necessity, inextricably tied to good governance, much less a virtue for its own sake. It supports the meritocratic ideal that Singapore believes in and has strategic significance in its national development. From 1959 till now, Singapore’s successes in the fight against corruption are broadly due to strong political will, an effective anti-corruption agency, effective laws, effective adjudication, effective administration and good governance and strong public support. The speaker will go through, in detail, each of these factors and how they had contributed to Singapore’s fight against corruption.
