Fostering workplace environments in support of whistleblowing

Abstract:
Following the Fitzgerald Inquiry, Queensland was the first Australian jurisdiction to introduce legislation to protect whistleblowers. Fifteen years later, the ‘Whistling While They Work’ project provides us with an opportunity to assess the current state of play in organisations across the Queensland public sector with regards to whistleblowing using empirical data.
This presentation will discuss the research findings and what they mean in the Queensland context and for public sector agencies more generally. It will also look at how three Queensland integrity agencies – the Crime and Misconduct Commission, the Queensland Ombudsman and Public Service Commission – responded to the research by developing a series of advisory resources to ensure that practical advice in regards to whistleblowing is available across the public sector.
