Identifying opportunities for organisational corruption
Speaker:
Stephen Horne
Managing Director, Internal Audit Bureau (IAB) Services
Abstract:
This presentation will address hotspots for fraud and corruption based on practical experience gained in the New South Wales public sector over an extended period. In doing this, the presentation will consider the impacts of the current recession on corruption risks.
The presentation will provide a reality check on views held by some agencies that internal fraud is minimal, and will consider the degree of reliance that can be placed on the control environment to prevent fraud and corruption.
The presentation will work through a simple risk assessment for tough economic times, as a precursor to examining how economic factors may be affecting the ethical climate. The concept of conditions coming together to form a ‘perfect storm of corruption’ will be presented, together with specific and practical action points to address the issues.
